What to Wear to the Melbourne Cup Carnival: A Style Guide for Every Race Day

Few events capture Melbourne's love of fashion quite like the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Over four race days at Flemington, the city dresses with intention. Each day carries its own traditions, from monochrome on Derby Day to soft florals on Oaks Day.

Whether you are attending one day or all four, our guide explores the style codes of each race day, with the shoes and accessories to complete the look.

Not heading to Flemington? The same style codes work beautifully wherever you celebrate the season, from the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate to The Everest in Sydney, a country cup, or a Melbourne Cup Day lunch with friends. Wherever the day takes you, these looks are made to go the distance.

Derby Day: Saturday, 31 October

The Carnival opens with Derby Day, the most traditional day of the week and the one with the clearest dress code: black and white. Monochrome dressing is expected and celebrated, which makes Derby Day a chance to play with contrast, texture and print.

This season, our polka dot satin was made for it. The WEN110 T-bar platform sandal comes in two black-and-white polka dot colourways, a playful, graphic take on Derby Day tradition. Its platform gives the height of a 110 mm heel with a gentler incline underfoot, so it feels as good at the last race as it does at the first.

Complete the look with the matching NAIA Foldover Clutch in the same polka dot satin. Wear the shoe and clutch in the same colourway for a polished, coordinated finish, or in opposite colourways for contrast: white dots with a black dress, black dots with white. The day's official flower is the blue cornflower, a subtle way to add a single note of colour.

For a classic alternative, the ALLURA85 slingback in black or white calf and the KHLOE85 block heel sandal in black satin keep the look sharp and timeless.

Melbourne Cup Day: Tuesday, 3 November

Melbourne Cup Day is the race that stops the nation, and the Carnival's most celebrated day. The mood is confident and celebratory, which makes it the day for bold colour, statement pieces and a touch of shine.

The official flower is the yellow rose, so warm golden tones feel particularly fitting. Metallic heels in gold add a luminous finish to block colours and prints alike. If your outfit is pared back, a vivid shoe in a rich colour, such as red satin, can become the focal point.

Oaks Day: Thursday, 5 November

Traditionally known as Ladies Day, Oaks Day is the most feminine day of the Carnival. Floaty silhouettes, florals, lace and soft pastels define the style, and the official flower is the pink rose.

Choose shoes that complement rather than compete. Blush tones sit beautifully beneath florals and pastels, while delicate lace adds a romantic finish. Fine straps and pointed toes keep the look light and elegant.

Stakes Day: Saturday, 7 November

Stakes Day closes the Carnival in a more relaxed, family-friendly mood. Dressing is a little more casual, with bright colour and easy silhouettes. Its official flower, the red rose, makes red a natural choice.

This is the day to prioritise comfort without losing polish. Espadrille wedges and block heels are ideal for a long afternoon on the lawns, and a red shoe nods to the day's flower while feeling effortlessly summery.

Race Day Tips, Wherever You're Racing

    • Choose a heel for the lawns. Much of race day is spent on grass, where fine stilettos tend to sink. Block heels, platforms and espadrille wedges spread your weight evenly and keep you steady.
    • Consider the height. A platform reduces the incline underfoot, which makes a higher heel far more comfortable over a long day.
    • Wear them in. Wear new shoes around the house before race day so they feel comfortable from the first step.
    • Pack for the journey home. A pair of foldable ballet flats in your clutch makes the trip home far easier.
    • Check the forecast. Spring weather can change quickly. Satin, silk and suede are best kept dry, so have a plan for showers.
